Our recent survey suggested a need
for a Saturday morning G.P. surgeries.
We have run a voluntary trial of
Saturday morning surgeries over the last 7 weeks, from 9am - 11.30am,
with our dispensary services also open during this period.
We want to provide you with the
best possible care when we are open. This takes careful planning
and requires good access to other services (i.e. the laboratories,
diagnostics and X-ray department at the Cumberland Infirmary etc.)
to help us to diagnose and treat your problems.
Auditing the trial, we have not
found evidence to suggest that there is a need for Saturday morning
surgeries at the practice.
The vast majority of appointments
were taken for non-acute complaints which could have waited until
Monday morning.
The patients using the Saturday
morning service were not the long-distance workers we had assumed
had made the request.
Many appointments were made but
not kept and over one quarter of the appointments were not booked
at all.
We have re-assessed Saturday morning
opening and concluded that it does not offer best service and
is not used to full capacity. Furthermore, providing a surgery
on a Saturday morning has resulted in reducing the number of surgeries
held during the week - which in turn has caused problems for patients.
